BMI Formula
The Body Mass Index is calculated by the following formula:
Body Weight in Kilograms divided by body height in Meter to the second
or
BMI = x KG / (y M * y M)
x=body weight in KG
y=body height in M
Example for 175 cm size and 70 kg weight:
BMI = 70 / (1,75 * 1,75) = 22,86
The resulting value is Kilogramm per Meter by the second, or short KG/M2. In most cases this can be left. There is no real sense in this, because humans are not mathematically square.
TIP FOR CALCULATOR:
If you try to use the formula in a calculator you may see some problems. But with a little change it is quite simple. So you can use:
weight / size / size
Example for 70 kg weight and 1,75 m size:
70 / 1,75 / 1,75 = 22,86
Step by step:
weight in kg
/ (divided by)
size in m
/ (divided by
size in m

A little confusing? Please feel free to use our friendly BMI Calculator

I decided to calculate my BMI by the formula I found in Shape magazine. The formula is your current weight times 730. Then, you divide that number by your height in inches. Next, you divide that number by your height in inches again.
After I did this, I decided to see what my BMI was from my BMI calculator I bought. You hold it out in front of you.
The difference is about 5-7%. The formula told me I was overweight, but the BMI calculator told me I was obese.
My question is, which should I believe? The formula or the calculator?
like the mathematical formula for calculating your BMI. not putting it into a BMI calculator online, but the actual formula. thanks!
